What kind of support do you need?

The right next step depends on your needs, location, safety, finances, and preferences. These options can complement one another, but they are not interchangeable.

Licensed counseling

A licensed mental-health professional can assess and treat emotional or psychological concerns. Verify current licensing in your state and ask about divorce experience.

Christian counseling

A counselor may integrate Christian faith with evidence-based care. Ask how faith is used and confirm professional credentials—not everyone using this label is licensed.

Pastoral care

A pastor or church leader may offer prayer, spiritual counsel, and community support. Pastoral care is not a substitute for licensed treatment when clinical care is needed.

Support groups

Peer groups can reduce isolation and offer encouragement from people with similar experiences. Ask who facilitates the group and how privacy and safety are handled.

Coaching and education

Educational resources can help with routines, boundaries, communication, and rebuilding. They do not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions.

Crisis care

If you may harm yourself or someone else, call 911 or 988 in the United States. If abuse or immediate danger is involved, contact emergency services or a qualified local crisis resource.

When to consider counseling

You do not have to wait for a crisis

  • Grief, anxiety, anger, or sleep problems disrupt daily life
  • You feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unable to make decisions
  • Conflict is affecting children or co-parenting
  • You need help rebuilding trust, boundaries, or identity
  • You want a confidential place to process faith and loss

Questions to ask a counselor

  • Are you licensed in my state?
  • What experience do you have with divorce recovery?
  • How do you integrate Christian faith?
  • What are your fees and cancellation policies?
  • Do you offer online sessions, and is that permitted for my location?
  • How do you protect privacy?
Online or local?

Location and licensing matter

Online counseling can expand your options, but licensed professionals generally must be permitted to serve clients where the client is physically located. Confirm current licensing and availability directly with any provider. Local counseling may offer in-person connection and easier coordination with nearby services.
